Hydrotherapy massage is a modality known for the combination of massage and water therapy to create a more effective treatment for relieving body pain while relaxing and freeing it from stress, tension, and fatigue.
Throughout history, this method has been used during the early centuries in Ancient Egypt, Rome, and Greece as a part of their medical care and luxury. Royalties were always treated in private pools, spas, and personal bath tubs with herbs and essential oils that are known for their healing, soothing, energizing, and revitalizing properties. The association of water with medical care has always fascinated the ancient people. However, regardless of its early use, it was not until the discovery and introduction of Father Sebastian Kneipp to the public that it has gained medical recognition and has stirred up the interests of the people. In his younger years, he was a very sickly child who was born in 1821. However, his condition did not stop him from developing an idea using cold and hot water therapy in providing relief and treatment to medical conditions which he shared at an early age.
He became one of the founders of the Naturopathic medicine movement and was also known for his works with the Kneipp Cure which is a type of water therapy used in a different method using various temperatures and pressures to address certain conditions and improve the overall health. Through research and experiments, fr. Kneipp was able to develop and popularize the hydrotherapy technique which was later on used in combination with underwater massage. He also published a book entitled My Water Cure in 1886 that were available in many languages. Aside from being known for the revival of the hydrotherapy technique, he was also famous in Norway for his bread recipe on whole wheat which was named after his family name. In Norway, Kneipp bread was the commonly sold, bought, and eaten type of bread.
Today, we can enjoy this approach of healing modality in many health centers and massage spas all around the world. Although the massage techniques used may vary, they maintain the use of gentle massage types in order to help the client relax during the therapy session which is done under the water. While the body is submerged, the therapist begins on working on the various areas of the body while enabling proper circulation through the stimulation of the nerves all over the body. In addition to the stimulating effect done by the massage technique, the water temperature also helps in improving the condition of the body thus enhancing as well the effectiveness of the massage therapy.
Although the massage methods used in this type of therapy are mild and gentle, the therapy should be done by a certified and well trained massage therapist to make sure that everything will go in an advantageous and risks-free treatment session. The best way to know if your therapist is qualified for the service is by asking his or her track records where you can see the experience and skill of the masseuse.
